Find a GP Surgery in Doncaster
Your GP is usually the first port of call for most health concerns. Everyone in England has the right to register with a GP practice. We can help if you’re struggling to find one accepting patients.
Key Facts About GP Registration
Registering With a GP in Doncaster
Finding and registering with the right GP practice is straightforward when you know the steps.
Step-by-Step
Search for GP practices on NHS.uk using your postcode. Check whether the practice is currently accepting new patients — shown on their listing. Call the practice to confirm and ask for a registration form.
When registering you’ll usually be asked for proof of identity and address, though you cannot legally be refused registration solely for not having these. Once registered, you’ll have access to appointments, referrals and repeat prescriptions.
You can register with the NHS App and set your nominated pharmacy at the same time. If you’re moving from another area, your medical records will be transferred automatically.
Search for a GP on NHS.uk →Refused Registration?
A GP practice can decline registration if not accepting new patients or if you live too far outside their area. They cannot refuse based on your health, age, disability, race, gender, sexuality or religion. If you believe you’ve been refused unfairly, contact us — we can advise and help escalate to NHS South Yorkshire ICB.
No Fixed Address?
You don’t need a fixed address to register. Homeless people and those without permanent accommodation can register using a temporary or care-of address. Practices must have a process to accommodate this.
Getting the Most From Your GP
Appointments
You should be offered an appointment within 2 weeks for routine concerns and the same day for urgent matters. If access is poor, speak to the practice manager or contact us.
Referrals
Your GP can refer you to specialists, community services or mental health support. You have the right to choose your hospital for outpatient appointments under the NHS Choice Framework.
Prescriptions
Your GP issues NHS prescriptions. Standard charges apply unless you’re exempt. Use the NHS App to order repeat prescriptions and nominate a pharmacy for electronic delivery.
Same-Day Access
For urgent same-day concerns, your GP should have a triage system. If unavailable, use the Same Day Health Centre or call 111. Both can direct you to the right care quickly.
Online Services
Most Doncaster practices offer online booking, prescription requests and record access via the NHS App or Patient Access. Ask your practice how to sign up for online services.
Long-Term Conditions
If you have diabetes, asthma, COPD or another long-term condition, you should receive a regular review — at least annually. Ask your practice about their chronic disease management programme.
